In January 2019, Russ suffered an aortic aneurysm in his throat. He underwent a biopsy on his lungs and endoscopy on his esophagus. During the four days waiting for the results he made peace with God, asking for forgiveness of sins and to watch over his loved ones. The results revealed benign cysts on his lungs. His entire esophagus was removed. The surgery caused a large amount of blood loss that threatened his life.

Although still dealing with many complications from the surgery Russ survived. The procedures left his vocal cords damaged and he is no longer able to sing, He continues as a writer and guitar player, with his guitar doing the singing. Russ wrote, “Survive to Legacy” the music for this podcast.

John MalletMentor

A son, brother, husband, father and my uncle. A career in public service, selfless, always consistent and a clinic in patience. Making sure everyone in the boat is in the right spot and making the perfect cast. He pinned my badge on my chest my first day as a police officer. He has been there for all of my life’s successes and failures. And for that, I’m forever grateful. We fished, but it was never really about fishing to me.
